The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced Tuesday that UNC first baseman/designated hitter Aaron Sabato has been named its National Freshman Hitter of the Year following his outstanding debut campaign.
Sabato–a native of Rye Brook, New York who has already been named a First Team All-American and the ACC Freshman of the Year–ended the year with a .343 batting average, 18 home runs and 63 RBIs. Each of those numbers led the entire UNC roster.
His home run total was the highest ever recorded by a Tar Heel freshman, besting the previous record of 15 held by Chad Flack.
