When the watch list for the sixth annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award was released Tuesday, UNC junior quarterback Nathan Elliott found himself among the candidates.

The award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define legendary NFL Hall-of-Famer Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.

In addition, the winner of the award must also be born in Texas, or have played at a Texas-area high school, junior college or university.

Elliott–who hails from Celina, Texas–started five games last year for the Tar Heels, throwing for a team-high 10 touchdowns during his limited time on the field.

This season, though, Elliott will begin the year as UNC’s starter thanks to a four-game suspension to sophomore Chazz Surratt–who has been competing with Elliott for the starting job over the course of the last two campaigns.
