Coming off a disappointing 3-9 season in 2017, the UNC football team is hoping to rebound heading into this upcoming 2018 campaign.

If this week offers any indication, however, things aren’t looking so good for the Tar Heels at the moment.

After head coach Larry Fedora told reporters at the ACC Football Kickoff event in Charlotte on Wednesday that he isn’t sure if football can cause CTE–a degenerative brain disease caused by repeated head trauma–despite numerous studies proving otherwise, he now finds himself with yet another controversy on his hands.

Later in the afternoon, WRAL’s Jeff Gravley reported that multiple Tar Heel football players could be facing suspensions after it was found that they were selling university-issued athletic gear.

UNC self-reported the violations, which took place this past February–to the NCAA. At this time, it’s unclear which players, or how many, were involved.

Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham issued the following statement about the issue: “When we became aware of a situation within the football program, we self-reported what the NCAA deemed to be a secondary violation. I worked closely with Chancellor Folt and Coach Fedora to address this issue from an NCAA, University and Department of Athletics perspective, and we have taken appropriate disciplinary action.”
