No it’s not Kawhi Leonard or Paul George, but the Los Angeles Lakers have signed themselves a free agent hoping to play alongside new acquisition LeBron James.

The team announced Wednesday night that it has agreed to terms on a contract with recently graduated UNC star point guard Joel Berry II, who was not selected in last month’s NBA Draft.

Terms of the deal were not released, but it comes after Berry spent the past few weeks playing for the Lakers’ summer league squad in Sacramento and Las Vegas.

The Most Outstanding Player of the 2017 Final Four, Berry brings toughness and championship pedigree to a young roster with high hopes entering the 2018-19 season thanks to the addition of the game’s best player in James.

As a senior at UNC this past season, the Florida native averaged 17.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 33.1 minutes per game.

Berry is expected to compete for a roster spot during the Lakers’ preseason training camp, and could spend a majority of the upcoming campaign playing with the team’s NBA G-League affiliate as he continues to improve his skills.
