Monmouth University announced Tuesday that it is adding former UNC All-American forward J.R. Reid as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team.

Reid will be working under head coach King Rice, who he played alongside for two of his three seasons at UNC.

While a player at UNC, Reid was the ACC Rookie of the Year in 1987, a First Team All-American in 1988 and a Third Team All-American in 1989–before ultimately being selected with the No. 5 overall pick in the 1989 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets.

This opportunity at Monmouth represents the first coaching job of Reid’s career.

“I’m ecstatic to get the opportunity to join with my good friend and tremendous coach King Rice,” Reid said, in a statement released by Monmouth.

“This is a dream come true. I’ve set a lot of goals for myself and to be a coach is one of them, and I’m so thankful Monmouth has given me the chance to do that,” he added. “I’m so excited to get to work with a group of guys I’ve been able to watch over the last few years and be able to help them mature. I’m really happy for the chance and I can’t wait to get started.”
