The season came to a stunning halt for the No. 5 UNC men’s soccer team on Sunday at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, as the Tar Heels fell 2-1 to the James Madison Dukes in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Aaron Ward-Baptiste sent home a rebound in the 68th minute to put James Madison ahead for good, in what was the first match all season that UNC (14-4-1) allowed more than one goal.
The Dukes took an early 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Manuel Ferriol found the top corner of the net in the 27th minute, but the Tar Heels responded less than five minutes later on a goal from Giovanni Montesdeoca.
Both teams traded opportunities the rest of the way–each finishing with a total of nine shots–but ultimately, James Madison was the only side able to break through again.
For the Tar Heels, their quest for a third straight appearance in the NCAA College Cup was ended.
