Thursday’s ACC Field Hockey Tournament quarterfinal in Chapel Hill between UNC and Boston College saw the Tar Heels cruise to a 4-0 victory.
The win was the 700th in the historic career of UNC head coach Karen Shelton, tying the NCAA all-time record held by UCONN’s Nancy Stevens.
Playing in the new on-campus stadium named after Shelton, the Tar Heels (8-1) took a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to a pair of goals from sophomore midfielder Paityn Wirth.
Madison Orobono and Erin Matson each added goals in the second half, while goalkeeper Amanda Hendry made nine saves to earn the shutout victory.
🗣 I haven’t played one second of any of those 700 wins. I couldn’t be more proud of the hundreds of student-athletes that have worked so hard, gotten great degrees and represented UNC so well.
