Just one day after being selected in the first round of Monday’s MLB Draft with the 17th overall pick by the Los Angeles Angels, UNC commit Jordyn Adams announced he will sign with the Angels rather than play football and baseball in Chapel Hill.

As the 17th pick, MLB’s rules dictate that Adams is due a contract worth $3,472,900 from the Angels–a sum that simply proved too much to pass up.

The son of UNC defensive line coach Deke Adams, the younger Adams was the Tar Heels top incoming recruit on the football field as a 6-foot-2 wide receiver with the skills to contribute immediately both on offense and as a returner for head coach Larry Fedora.

He was also expected to be a walk-on centerfielder for the UNC baseball team.

As a senior at Green Hope High School in Cary this past year, Adams hit .452 and stole 26 bases. On the football field last fall, Adams caught 54 passes for 1,060 yds and 12 TDs in 13 games–while also setting a state record by running back three punts for scores in a game against Cary High School.
