UNC announced on Monday that senior point guard Joel Berry will miss approximately four weeks with a broken bone in his right hand.

The news is a huge blow for head coach Roy Williams and the Tar Heels, as they try to prepare for the upcoming regular season–which begins on Nov. 10 at home against Northern Iowa.

Berry was the Most Outstanding Player at the Final Four in 2017 during UNC’s national championship run.

He averaged 14.7 points and 3.6 assists per game last season, and is expected to take on an even larger role this year with the departures of former starters Justin Jackson, Isaiah Hicks and Kennedy Meeks.

ESPN recently named Berry to their Preseason All-America First Team, and he is a preseason candidate for the Bob Cousy Award–which is given annually to the nation’s top point guard.

With Berry sidelined, sophomore Seventh Woods and freshman Jalek Felton will likely each spend more time in the lead ball-handling role.
