A new addition to the UNC football staff was announced Thursday, as former Rutgers cornerbacks coach Henry Baker will join the Tar Heels for the upcoming season.

Baker served in the position at Rutgers during the 2017 campaign, after spending the previous six years in a similar role at Delaware.

While Baker was on Delaware’s defensive staff, the Blue Hens ranked fifth in the nation among all Football Championship Subdivision teams in total defense in 2015.

His defensive backs also ranked in the top 25 in both passing yards and interceptions in 2016.

As a player, Baker was a two-year starter at Maryland before graduating in 2003–meaning he’s spent plenty of time in the ACC.

“I’ve played against UNC and I’ve coached against UNC, and the atmosphere here has always been electric,” Baker said. “To now be in Carolina Blue, this is truly an exciting time for me and my family. I can’t wait to get started.”

It’s assumed that Baker will again work with the defensive backs under head coach Larry Fedora, while also bringing a great reputation as a recruiter.

“We are excited to bring Henry to Chapel Hill to join our staff,” Fedora said. “He adds a unique perspective having both coached and played in the ACC, and I know he will bring great energy to our staff as a coach and as a recruiter. We welcome Henry, Theresa and their three children into the Tar Heel family.”
