Longtime MLB catcher Chris Iannetta–who starred at UNC from 2002-04–announced Saturday that he is retiring after 14 seasons as a major leaguer.
Iannetta had signed with the New York Yankees on a minor-league contract this past offseason, but failed to secure a spot on the major league roster–which is what prompted his retirement according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Over the course of his career, Iannetta posted a .230 batting average with 141 home runs across 1,197 games with the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks.
He was drafted by Colorado in 2004 and spent eight seasons with the Rockies, helping them to three playoff appearances and a spot in the 2007 World Series.
Iannetta also represented the United States in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
