Time and time again the sixth-ranked UNC baseball team found a way to put runners on base Wednesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium, and time and time again the Tar Heels struggled to take advantage.

The result was a 5-2 loss to the visiting St. John’s Red Storm, the team’s second in a row and third in five games to begin the 2018 campaign.

It also marks the first time since 1962 that the Tar Heels have lost each of their first two home games.

UNC (2-3) piled up 10 hits compared to just eight for St. John’s (4-0), but the Tar Heels ultimately did themselves in by going just 2-for-19 at the plate with runners on base.

Kyle Datres, Michael Busch and Dylan Enwiller each tallied two hits for UNC, with Enwiller’s RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning leading to each of the Tar Heels’ two runs.

Thanks to an error by St. John’s catcher Rob Boselli, both Cody Roberts and Ashton McGee were able to score following Enwiller’s hit–tying the game at 2-2.

The tie was broken in the top of the seventh inning, when Mike Antico hit a solo home run over the foul pole in right field off UNC freshman reliever Cooper Criswell.

From there, the Red Storm added two more runs in the frame for insurance.

Over the final two innings, the Tar Heels brought the tying run to the plate on multiple occasions but once again weren’t able to capitalize.
