The eighth-ranked Diamond Heels continued their scalding hot start to the 2017 season on Tuesday afternoon, crushing the Winthrop Eagles 11-0 at Boshamer Stadium behind a home run and four RBIs from junior shortstop Logan Warmoth.

Freshman Tyler Baum also pitched 5.2 scoreless innings in his first career collegiate start for UNC, which is now 8-0 to start off the year.

Winthrop put up a fight during the initial stages of the game, as starting pitcher Riley Arnone held the Tar Heels scoreless through four innings.

Once UNC reached the Eagle bullpen in the fifth frame, however, things got out of hand rather quickly.

An untimely balk allowed the first run to score, but that ended up snowballing into a five-run inning that saw RBI hits from Kyle Datres, Brandon Riley, Cody Roberts and Ashton McGee.

Warmoth then hit his solo home run in the sixth inning, before smacking a three-run double in his next at-bat as part of a four-run seventh inning.

The Tar Heels added one more to their tally in the eighth–just to be safe–as freshman Bo Weiss came on to pitch the ninth inning in what was also his first appearance on the mound in college.

Up Next:

UNC continues its 17-game homestand to open the season on Wednesday, as it hosts St. Johns in midweek action.

Game Notes:
