Incoming UNC freshman guard Coby White was selected Tuesday as one of 12 members of the USA Basketball Men’s U-18 National Team, which will compete at the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men June 10-16 in St. Catharines, Canada.

Kansas head coach Bill Self is in charge of leading the U-18 team, as it prepares at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Although Self will be the coach, the team itself was handpicked by the USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee.

“I think the committee made some good selections, and I’m excited about working with this group,” Self said. “One of the things I think they bring to the table is versatility. They’re very interchangeable.

“I can see us playing four little guards around a big,” the coach added. “I could see us playing two bigs, two little guards and a three. I think this team has some different things they’ll be able to do, depending on how we stack up against our opponents.”

This past season as a senior at Greenfield School in Wilson, White set the new all-time career scoring record in the state of North Carolina–while also being recognized as a McDonald’s All-American.

Of the 12 players selected, only Quentin Grimes has previous national team experience.

The U.S. U-18 team will be in pursuit of its fifth consecutive gold medal in the FIBA Americas Championship, and will begin play against the Dominican Republic on June 10.
