UNC freshman Benjamin Sigouin was honored Monday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as the Carolina Region Rookie of the Year on the men’s side.
Sigouin–who was already named the ACC Freshman of the Year for his efforts–becomes the second Tar Heel in as many years to win the award, following in the footsteps of sophomore standout William Blumberg.
He is the sixth UNC player to win the honor in the history of the program, but just the third since 2007.
After enrolling at UNC in January, the Vancouver native quickly asserted himself as a force to be reckoned with–posting a 16-4 record in singles competition while playing mostly on Court Two against the opponents’ second-best players.
Sigouin also made a rise to No. 32 in the individual singles rankings, which was good enough to earn him an at-large bid in the upcoming NCAA Men’s Singles Tournament.
