UNC men’s basketball will wear retro jerseys tonight against NC State to honor the 50th Anniversary of North Carolina’s 1969 team.
The ’69 team was the last team to win three consecutive ACC Championships and reach the Final Four in three straight seasons.
Modeled by freshman Nassir Little in the tweet above, the white jerseys feature Carolina blue lettering and the Tar Heel logo on the shorts.
Roy Williams said on his radio show last night that he was unaware of retro jerseys for Carolina’s game against NC State, but joked that a change might occur at halftime if things aren’t going well.
“I have no idea,” Williams said when asked about the jersys. “But if we stink it up in the first half, we’re not wearing the suckers in the second half, I’ll tell you that.
“I don’t care what agreement anybody’s made. If we stink it up, we’re going to change at halftime.”
In addition to tonight’s retro jerseys, UNC made a fashion statement earlier this season when Williams and the coaches rocked exclusive Air Jordan 1’s for Coaches vs. Cancer Suits And Sneakers Week.
Williams made the comparison between tonight’s retro jerseys and the shoes he wore for UNC’s game against Virginia Tech.
“It’s just like it was Coaches vs. Cancer. I had those shoes that everybody went crazy about. And the way the game started that night, Steve Robinson said those shoes aren’t going to make the second half, but we got it going a bit right before half and it was all right.”
Pictures of Williams wearing the Air Jordan 1’s went viral online, but none more so than one particular image.
“I guess there was one point during the game I kicked my foot up really high trying to help the ball go in the basket, so now there’s somebody trying to do a deal with that, putting it on t shirts, so I don’t know, whatever it takes to a certain degree.”
UNC hosts NC State tonight at 8:00 p.m. from the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill. Pre-game coverage starts on 97.9 The Hill WCHL at 6:30 p.m.
