The UNC volleyball program announced its schedule and opponents for the upcoming 2021 season on Tuesday.
For head coach Joe Sagula’s 32nd year leading the program, the Tar Heels will host 15 home games in Carmichael Arena, including three of the preseason Top 25 teams in the ACC.
UNC will begin with its Blue-White team scrimmage on August 20 before hosting High Point for an exhibition game the following afternoon.
The season’s non-conference competition begins with tournament in Texas, as Carolina will take on both Stephen F. Austin and Pacific on Friday, August 27 before playing the host SMU on Saturday, August 28. UNC will open its home schedule with another three games in two days on September 3 and 4. The Tar Heels will face Colorado State on Friday before taking on Wofford and East Carolina on Saturday.
Carolina’s volleyball team will then travel to Michigan for the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. UNC is set to play Michigan State on September 10 before facing Michigan on September 12. Afterward, the Tar Heels will return to Carmichael Arena to close out non-conference play against Elon, Charlotte and Davidson.
The ACC schedule for UNC begins on September 24 with a home game against No. 8 Pittsburgh. Among the other conference highlights include hosting No. 24 Notre Dame and defending ACC champions No. 11 Louisville in the same weekend. In-state rivals Wake Forest, North Carolina State and Duke each have October matches in Chapel Hill against Carolina.
The conference schedule closes for UNC by hosting Miami at home on November 21 before facing Duke away on November 26. The 2021 NCAA Tournament begins on December 2.
“Once again,” said Sagula in a statement, “this 2021 schedule will provide a great balance of competitive teams from across the country and our region to provide opportunities for our team to grow and reach our goals. We feel we have the depth this year on our roster to face the many challenges and train and compete at a high level in both the ACC and against a variety of non-conference opponents.”
Carolina will aim to build upon an 10-8 record tallied in the 2020 season, which saw half of the games played in fall and the other half in the spring of 2021.
