In a tournament featuring all four of last season’s national semifinalists, the UNC men’s golf team came out on top in the East Lake Cup in Atlanta this week. It’s the team’s third title in five events this fall.

Carolina finished second out of the four teams after a round of stroke play on Monday at three-under par. David Ford and Maxwell Ford each tied for second place on the individual leaderboard at three-under.

The tournament then moved to match play the following day, with UNC taking on reigning national runners-up Georgia Tech in the semifinals. It was a rematch from the national semifinals last season. This time, Carolina got the better of the Yellow Jackets, but only after two of the five matches went into multiple extra holes. Maxwell Ford finally broke the deadlock on the 22nd hole of his match, securing the win for UNC after earlier victories from David Ford and Austin Greaser. Maxwell Ford had to come back from down three holes after the 13th, tying the match on the 18th to force extra holes.

Carolina had a much easier time in the championship against Florida State on Wednesday, with victories from David Ford, Greaser and Peter Fountain securing the win and the East Lake Cup for the Tar Heels.

The victory wraps up an impressive fall season for the Tar Heels, who came in second place in the only two events they didn’t win. Carolina is ranked No. 1 in the latest coaches poll and will likely hold that title until February, when the team returns to action. UNC’s first tournament of the spring season is the Amer Ari Invitational in Waimea, Hawai’i, which begins February 8.
