The UNC men’s golf team won its first match play event on Tuesday to advance to the NCAA semifinals, but fell in an all-ACC matchup with Georgia Tech later that day. The Tar Heels’ quest for their first national championship will have to wait at least one more year.

Carolina was lucky to escape its quarterfinal match with No. 8 seed Arizona State. Dylan Menante and Ryan Burnett had won the first two matchups of the day, but the Sun Devils were threatening to sweep the final three. Austin Greaser lost his matchup, and both David Ford and Peter Fountain were trailing heading into hole No. 16. But Ford won on 16 and 17 to turn the tide and win his match and clinch the quarterfinal for the Tar Heels, 3-1.

That magic didn’t quite extend to later in the day against the Yellow Jackets, though Menante and Ford won their matchups. Both Burnett and Greaser fell in convincing fashion, and Fountain couldn’t quite mount a comeback from three down on the back nine. The junior cut that deficit to one hole but could get no further, and Georgia Tech advanced to the championship match on Wednesday.

The season is still a high water-mark for the Tar Heels under head coach Andrew DiBitetto. Carolina had advanced to match play but lost in the quarterfinals in each of the last two seasons.
