The start of the 2022 college baseball season is just two weeks away, and once again Carolina finds itself in the middle of a tough ACC gauntlet. The Diamond Heels were picked to finish fifth in the ACC Coastal Division in the conference’s Coaches Poll Thursday.
Georgia Tech, the two-time defending Coastal champions (not counting 2020), were once again picked atop the division with eight first-place votes. Virginia received five and Miami one. Duke, the defending ACC Tournament champions, were slotted in fourth ahead of Carolina. Virginia Tech and Pitt were picked to finish sixth and seventh.
In the Atlantic, Florida State received eight first-place votes and stands atop the division. The Seminoles were also picked as the outright conference champion. College World Series semifinalists NC State sit in second place. Notre Dame, who won the division in 2021, received three first-place votes, yet sit in third behind the Wolfpack, who received one. Louisville received two first-place votes and placed fourth, while Clemson, Wake Forest and Boston College sit in fifth, sixth and seventh place.
In 2021, the Diamond Heels put together a 28-27 overall record and 18-18 mark in conference play, placing fourth in the Coastal behind Georgia Tech, Miami and Virginia. Carolina hasn’t won the division since the 2018 season.
The Diamond Heels will kick off the 2022 season on February 18 with a three-game home series against Seton Hall. The team’s ACC opener will be a three-game home series against Pittsburgh between March 11 and 13.

UNC picked to finish 5th in our division in baseball? Hmmm… Well at least we have a nice coach. We have a “nice” university, with a “nice” Athletic Director, with a “nice” basketball coach, and a “nice” football coach (who just got a whopping raise after 3 mediocre seasons). So it’s good that we have a nice baseball coach. Maybe he can have a few more mediocre seasons and get a raise!
