UNC men’s basketball eked out a win against Miami Monday night 75-71, but it was not without a special performance from senior guard R.J. Davis.
Davis scored a career-high 42 points on 14-22 shooting, which set a new record for points scored in the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill. It comes after Davis’ worst shooting performance of the season on Saturday in a win against Virginia, where he made just one field goal and finished with 12 points.
Davis hit the new high-water mark for the Carolina home court thanks to a flurry of three-pointers late in the second half, including a pair within two possessions of each other with five minutes remaining. A trio of free throws eventually got him to 42 on the night – making the performance the highest-scoring in the Dean Dome since Tyler Hansbrough scored 40 against Georgia Tech in 2006.
Scenes from the Smith Center showed the Carolina crowd going wild after the second consecutive three-pointer, and recognizing Davis’ accomplishment of eclipsing 40 after the free throws.

Several former Tar Heel men’s basketball players — including teammates of Davis’ — celebrated his career high with praise…and jokes.
Even Tar Heel athletes from other sports who were tuned into the game shared posts about Davis’ eruption of points.
Other Carolina fans and media members alike, of course, joined in on the action. Here are some of the highlights:
