The sixth transfer from the UNC men’s basketball program this offseason is certainly its biggest, as Caleb Love announced his plans to leave Chapel Hill and sent Tar Heel social media circles into a tizzy.
After using more than a week after the team played its final game, the St. Louis native shared he would be departing after three seasons with the Tar Heels. He posted a letter to the UNC community, thanking both the program and fans for their support.
A handful of current and former players wished Love well on this next step in his collegiate career, including Armando Bacot, Brady Manek and Garrison Brooks — who each played with Love for a season — and graduating senior Jackson Watkins. D’Marco Dunn, Seth Trimble and others re-shared Love’s post on their Instagram stories as well, offering words of encouragement.

Some Carolina fans wished the junior guard the best of luck, while others shared their disappointment to see him leave or agreement that Love could use a fresh start.
Thank you so much for being a Tar Heel @caleb2love and nothing but the best of luck at your next stop and in your career. 🏀🐏 pic.twitter.com/N0ityYEQps

Going to be strange seeing Caleb play without a Carolina jersey but that’s college basketball now. Felt for him this season, it’s never fun being the fall guy especially after a Final Four run for the ages. Will always be pulling for him 💯 https://t.co/CgWOOfsiCa

For real this is the worst I have ever felt as a UNC fan. Y’all made a kid not feel welcome or a part of the Carolina Family. I hope you are happy

As part of the outpouring on social media, some followers thanked or credited Love for his play during the Tar Heels NCAA Tournament run last spring, which included big performances from the guard that got UNC to the national championship game.
This is what you should remember about Caleb Love. Last year’s title run doesn’t happen without him. https://t.co/ZtviMk0p9T pic.twitter.com/My6yVSO2e5

I think this is the clip that best represents the Caleb Love experience to me
The sound the crowd made here, when he shot this ball.. yet he drilled it
Last year's run to the Final 4 arguably doesn't happen without this shot and his many other big onespic.twitter.com/3e4tTIUQvE

Many Carolina fans on social media specifically mentioned Love’s clutch three-pointer over Duke in the 2022 Final Four, which propelled the Tar Heels to a victory in Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final game.

Once he decides his destination, Love will have two more years of eligibility if he chooses. Because he played his freshman season during the COVID-affected 2020-21 season, he is among the NCAA athletes granted an extra season of eligibility.
