UNC wide receiver Devontez “Tez” Walker received the final ruling on his 2023 eligibility on Thursday, as an NCAA committee voted against his waiver to play after transferring from Kent State this offseason.
The pre-season All-ACC junior and Charlotte native played two seasons with the Golden Flashes after leaving NC Central in 2020, as the Eagles did not have a football season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The NCAA, however, passed a rule change in January limiting players to just one transfer with immediate eligibility effective for the 2023-24 athletic season — approving the measure two days after Walker had enrolled and begun preparation to play at UNC.
The UNC football program announced the NCAA’s ruling on social media Thursday afternoon, sharing head coach Mack Brown’s displeasure with the ruling and Walker being ineligible for the rest of 2023.

The ruling quickly drew sharp reactions from many others on social media. Some of Walker’s teammates, including Kaimon Rucker, J.J. Jones, and Elijah Green, let their thoughts be known about the NCAA’s process.
They say they’re for the student athletes and protect and advocate for the mental health of student athletes, however, denying my boy @DevontezWalker eligibility just showed they’re about the process over the people…💔
This year for you Tez💙🐏— Kaimon “The Butcher🔪” Rucker (@_kruck75_) September 7, 2023
Not for the STUDENT ATHLETES! Shame.

Disappointed. #FreeTez

Some social media users, including media members, reacted to UNC’s statements in tandem with the ruling. ESPN’s Jay Bilas seemed to echo the sentiment shared by UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham, while others shared surprise at the strength of Brown’s statement, in which the Hall of Famer said he “lost all faith in [the NCAA’s] ability to lead and govern our sport.”
Un-effing-believable. Hey NCAA: Stop saying “student-athlete welfare” and “mental health.” You clearly don’t care about either. https://t.co/ueisr2deDt

This might be the most pointed statement I have ever seen from a head coach. https://t.co/KbwAcoG3br

At this point, North Carolina will probably leave NCAA before Tar Heels leave ACC

In which a tenured coach essentially replaces “Bad Boy” with “the @NCAA” and raps “Hit ‘Em Up” in a press release. #UNC #NCAA https://t.co/tSjcPCYCFW

Again, it’s worth noting that Mason Smith was suspended because he participated in NIL just weeks before NIL rules went into effect, but it wasn’t retroactive.
Tez Walker was already enrolled at UNC before the new transfer rule went into effect, but that one was retroactive.

It's truly amazing the NCAA has stood idly by for years, doing little to nothing to address larger problems that've made college athletics (even) more dysfunctional, and now amid the enormous mess that is the entire enterprise it decides to … get tough on two-time transfers.

I heard UNC has lawyers. Now that they’ve let the kangaroo court process play out, maybe go after the organization the Supreme Court called pointless.

Unsurprisingly, many UNC fans and college football community members weighed in heavily against the ruling as well, continuing to either poke fun at the NCAA or criticize college sports’ governing body.
Real courts of law don’t punish someone for violating a law that wasn’t even a law at the time they did the thing they’re being punished for. Not just bc it’s unconstitutional, but also bc it’s *completely insane*. #UNC https://t.co/CoUFLWLGzM

.@seniorbowl supports Tez Walker and looks forward to watching him play next fall.
Total BS we had to remove him from the board today. https://t.co/zkqt8lPHWn pic.twitter.com/LnBcUtLJ0A

JT Daniels is allowed to play for half the country with no punishment, but Tez Walker is denied eligibility…

Letting Tez's former coaches and teammates at Kent State leave and join new teams and participate right away but not Tez makes no sense. It's time for players to have legal standing as employees so they have the same labor rights that coaches do https://t.co/VSpxxT0GaE
