UNC football dropped its regular season finale to N.C. State on Saturday, falling behind early and ultimately losing 39-20. The loss — Carolina’s fourth in six games — is the team’s third consecutive defeat at the hands of the Wolfpack.
With that, many Tar Heel fans took to social media on Saturday night to bemoan the football team’s performance and speculate next steps as the program looks to regain its composure before a postseason bowl.
With Carolina falling into a first-half deficit after sputtering offensive drives and UNC’s defense allowing 26 points, some fans and media members jumped onto X — the social media platform formerly known as Twitter — to share their observations of the team’s preparation. The Tar Heels ultimately allowed 504 total yards to the Wolfpack offense, which was the second most given up to an opponent this season, and managed just 384 yards of offense for Carolina’s second-worst output of the season.

Some UNC fans on social media pointed out the disappointing regular season end to quarterback Drake Maye’s collegiate career. Maye, who is a projected first round pick in the NFL Draft and could sit out any postseason bowl game, followed quarterback Sam Howell at Carolina — who also is beginning his NFL career after falling short of team goals with UNC.
The loss for football does come less than one week after UNC field hockey notched its 11th national championship, which the ACC Network celebrated during the broadcast by playing a brief congratulatory video to the program. Some Tar Heel fans latched onto that program’s success on Saturday night in wake of football’s struggles against N.C. State.
Mostly, though, Carolina fans vented their frustrations during a rivalry game that N.C. State largely controlled from the first quarter onward. UNC finishes its regular season 8-4 after beginning it 6-0 and will await to see which bowl it will play in after conference championship games are played next week.
