Following news of an armed and dangerous person on the UNC campus, community members from around Chapel Hill, current UNC students and alumni shared messages of support online.
Both as the events of the afternoon unfolded, and after learning that a faculty member was shot and killed, people shared their reactions to social media. That included elected officials, ranging from Chapel Hill Town Council members to congressional representatives to the governor.

The scenes out of UNC-Chapel Hill are heartbreaking, and something that no student, teacher, or parent should ever have to live through. Susan and I mourn the innocent life taken. We must all continue to work together to protect our schools, confront the nation's mental health…

Tough day in Chapel Hill.
Tragic loss of life.
Long term loss of security.
And a deepening sense of despair about living in a society that values guns so much and life so little.
Let us never stop the push for a world at peace.— Sen. Graig Meyer (@GraigMeyer) August 28, 2023
My heart goes out to the family of the faculty member killed on campus and to the UNC community. Our campuses should be safe places for everyone. Families, students, faculty and staff, please know that that the Chapel Hill and Carrboro community is here for you as we grieve.

This is devastating. While sitting in lockdown for over three hours, I worried about who had been hurt or killed, but I didn't get really upset until my children, home from school were scared for me. I'm angry and horrified that a faculty member died today. This is not normal. https://t.co/U04PpKtU8j

The shooting at UNC today was awful and my deepest sympathies to all affected. Mimi and I mourn for her fellow faculty member and family. We need to use all tools – more gun safety laws, MH services, law enforcement, etc to stop this. Special thx to our 1st responders from all.

To the @UNC community, I grieve with you and share the deep sadness you are experiencing in the face of this traumatic event. I am heartbroken for the victim's family. Please know that #ChapelHill is your community, too, and we are here for you. Lean on each other and lean on us.

Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger wrote an open letter to the community Monday evening, saying it was “a sad day for our community” and expressing her pride in how residents came together to respond to the shooting across the town.
“We are heartbroken for the UNC students, faculty, and staff whose sense of safety on their beautiful campus was shattered by the day’s events and for those children, teachers, and staff who had to lock down on their first day back to our local schools,” wrote Hemminger. “We are grateful that safety protocols were in place.
“The details of what happened will become clear in the coming days,” the mayor continued. “In the meantime, we extend our thoughts, prayers, and support to the victims and their families, friends, and colleagues. We know that this will be a difficult time and encourage you to reach out to someone if you need any emotional or mental help.”
Additionally, Carolina alumni, current students, faculty of past and present, and members of the media shared their perspectives and emotions around the tense afternoon. Some chose to reflect on how gun violence had reached the heart of UNC’s campus and how Monday’s events reflect many other firearm incidents on college campuses.
So devastated by what has happened in Chapel Hill and in my departmental home starting when I was 18 years old. Love to all. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😢😢😢😢

Today was a hard day in Chapel Hill. I’m thankful everyone in the @LeibfarthGroup is safe. There is something surreal in seeing law enforcement point a gun at the spot I have stood in front my fumehood for the last 4 years in Caudill Labs. pic.twitter.com/QICTVd79OU

Today was a difficult day for us in Chapel Hill.
But this is every (infuriating, unacceptable) day in this nation.
None of this is normal. pic.twitter.com/ki8usG9puT

As a UNC Chapel Hill student who is currently still sheltering in place with no updates other than the sound of sirens and helicopters, thoughts and prayers aren’t enough. This shouldn’t happen. We shouldn’t have to go to class in fear of our lives. We need legislative change.
— Mary-Margaret Barbee (@marymarbless) August 28, 2023
Hi! Just because I have received several messages and DMs, I am safe. I hope everyone else on UNC’s campus is safe. Nobody should have to go through this.
— Shelby Swanson (she/her) (@shelbymswanson) August 28, 2023
Today has been a difficult day for the entire @UNC community. I’m thinking of students, faculty, and staff who should never have to fear for their lives while at school and work. We have to do better. Thanks to all first responders, including @ChapelHillPD & @UNCPolice.

This was & still is one of my worst nightmares and it's because it happens way, way more often than it should. Really hoping everyone is OK. https://t.co/vC5jS9sz9p

The saddest part of what happened in Chapel Hill today (outside of the very obvious) is that it’ll soon be forgotten in the endless news cycle. And yet the people locked down in classrooms and buildings, wondering what was happening, will remember that fear forever.

It was no surprise to see many members of the UNC athletics community share their support for fellow Tar Heels too, as coaches, players, and Carolina staff from different programs posted words of empathy and encouragement.
Is this really happening to me again? During my freshman year of HS, my Parkland community lost 17 angels. Today, I am having to relive the grief and unease of a shooter on my campus once again. My heart goes out to my Chapel Hill family today. I know how hard these times can be.
