It appears Matt Harvey’s days as the Dark Knight of Gotham are over.

The former UNC right-hander–a former first-round MLB Draft choice who rose to fame with the New York Mets as an All-Star in 2013–was designated for assignment Friday by the only major league team he’s ever played for.

Harvey had Tommy John surgery on his elbow following the 2013 season, causing him to miss the entire 2014 campaign. He was solid after returning to 2015, but has seen his numbers sharply decline over each of the last two seasons–posting ERA’s of 4.86 and 6.70 in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

That continued into this year, as Harvey currently has an ERA of 7.00 in 27 innings. The Mets demoted Harvey to the bullpen a couple weeks ago, much to his dismay.

According to the New York Daily News, Mets’ general manager Sandy Alderson recently asked Harvey to take a demotion to the minor leagues in order to try and regain his old form and confidence. When Harvey refused, the move was made to designate him for assignment.

This means Harvey will now either be claimed on waivers by another team, traded or released.
