As free agency begins to heat up in the NFL, the Detroit Lions made a cost-saving decision on Wednesday to release their starting tight end Eric Ebron–a former UNC standout taken with the 10th overall pick of the 2014 draft.

Ebron has, at times, shown flashes of the potential he brought into the league, but has yet to live up to his draft position.

Although the Lions picked up his fifth-year option for 2018 prior to last season, they ultimately decided Ebron wasn’t worth the $8.25 million he was due.

Through his first four years in the league, Ebron has started 37 of the 56 games he’s played in–piling up 186 catches for 2,070 yards and 11 touchdowns.

One thing the former Tar Heel has going his way, however, is time.

Since he entered the professional ranks as a 21-year-old before he had finished his college eligibility, Ebron is still just 24 years old.

With plenty of teams seeking help in the passing game this offseason, the 6-foot-4-inch tight end will certainly be in high demand.
