The top-ranked UNC men’s golf team shot a tournament-best 10-under par in the final round of the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational in Texas on Tuesday, but a clutch finish by No. 2 Vanderbilt on the final hole helped the Commodores top the Tar Heels by a single stroke to win the event.

UNC came into Tuesday’s final round sitting in fourth place at 5-under par, 13 strokes behind first-place Oklahoma, eight strokes behind second-place Arizona State and five strokes behind third-place Vanderbilt. But a red-hot final day from the Tar Heels, combined with the Sooners (+14 in the third round) and the Sun Devils (even par) both faltering, slingshot Carolina into a slim lead as the round neared its end.

Austin Greaser shot six birdies to finish with a five-under 65 on the day. He finished the tournament tied for 14th on the individual leaderboard. Maxwell (T12) and David Ford (T5) joined Greaser in the top 15. Maxwell Ford and Kenan Poole both also shot under 70 on the day to lead the Carolina charge. UNC finished with a one-shot lead, but two Commodores each birdied their final holes shortly after to tie and then take the lead.

The No. 1 Tar Heels will have a short turnaround to their next event, as they are scheduled to compete in the Williams Cup in Wilmington (named after former UNC men’s basketball head coach Roy Williams) starting on October 9. Carolina is the two-time defending champion at the event.
