Two days before Carolina and Duke meet in the Final Four in New Orleans, North Carolina governor Roy Cooper proclaimed his state as “The Center of the College Basketball Universe.” Cooper posted a video on his official Twitter account to accompany the proclamation.

In the proclamation, Cooper, a UNC alumnus, not only congratulated Duke and Carolina for making it to the Final Four, but also gave nods to Wake Forest’s Alondes Williams and Steve Forbes for winning ACC Player and Coach of the Year, Fayetteville State for winning the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship, and the NC State women’s basketball team for advancing to the Elite Eight.

“Teams from North Carolina have produced some of the legends of the game,” the proclamation read, “including Stephen Curry, Tim Duncan, Grant Hill, David Thompson, Chris Paul, Earl Monroe, James Worthy and Michael Jordan (the GOAT) and many more.”

Governor Cooper lauded both Duke and UNC for being “two of the greatest academic, research and health care universities in the world,” who “often collaborate on efforts that make the world a healthier and better place.”

But as he added one paragraph later, “on Saturday, April 2, at approximately 8:49 EDT, no one will be thinking about that.”
