Aquilla Mateen James, a UNC softball player who graduated in 2016, is back with the Tar Heels. Mateen James, nicknamed “Kiwi” by her teammates and coaches, is the program’s new Director of Sports Performance.

As a player, Mateen James appeared in 214 games. She was named a second-team All-ACC performer in 2014. Mateen James is also in the program’s Top 10 in career triples (11) and runs scored (142). She also ranks fifth in Carolina history with 70 stolen bases, and set a season record by swiping 26 bags in her senior season of 2016.

“I’m thrilled to have Kiwi Mateen James back on our staff,” UNC head coach Donna Papa told Carolina Athletics. “We’re fortunate to have someone with her knowledge base of the game and the skill set she brings to execute this position. She will help us navigate through scouting and technology as well as other important areas of our program.”

After graduating with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science, Mateen James served as a volunteer assistant with the Tar Heels from 2016 to 2018, and also served as the Director of Sports Performance in 2019. With Mateen James on the staff, the 2017 and 2019 teams both appeared in the NCAA Tournament.

The softball team has not yet announced its 2022 schedule. The team went 14-26 in 2021.
