Megan Smith Lyon’s first game as the head coach of the UNC softball program went about as well as she could have hoped. Not only did Lyon’s Tar Heels earn a decisive 11-0 win against North Carolina A&T on Friday, they did so while pitcher Britton Rogers tossed the ninth perfect game in program history.

Rogers, a transfer from Georgia making her Carolina debut, retired all 15 batters she faced and recorded eight strikeouts before the game was ended after the fifth inning via mercy rule.

Carolina had no trouble scoring runs of its own, putting up six in the bottom of the first, two in the second and third and one in the fourth. Catcher Autumn Owen – who Smith Lyon brought with her to Carolina from Marshall – hit a three-run home run in the first and added a single in the third to end with four RBI.

The game is the first of a doubleheader for the Tar Heels, who will face Winthrop in a true road matchup at 5 p.m. Winthrop is hosting this weekend’s event, and Carolina will face both NC A&T and Winthrop again on Saturday.
