UNC’s Kate Faasse scored two goals in the final 2:46 of the second half on Sunday to help the Tar Heels overcome a 2-1 deficit at Colorado and earn a thrilling 3-2 win. Faasse’s second goal came with less than a minute remaining on the clock.

Carolina grabbed the lead midway through the first half on freshman Bella Gaetino’s first collegiate goal and remained in front through halftime, but the Buffaloes came storming out of the locker room with a goal in the 53rd minute to equalize. UNC threatened to nose in back front, but Colorado found the back of the net again in the 74th minute, scoring off a rebound to take a 2-1 lead.

The Tar Heels kept knocking on the door until Faasse finally broke through in the 88th minute to equalize, touching home a shot across the face of goal from Olivia Thomas. She was back at it just 2:05 later, meeting a Tessa Dellarose cross and nudging it past the Buffalo keeper. Colorado couldn’t manage an answer in the game’s final 41 seconds.

Faasse’s winner was the last of Carolina’s 22 shots, doubling up the Buffaloes’ 11. The Tar Heels forced nine saves out of Colorado keeper Jordan Nytes and had four players record at least two shots on goal: Maddie Dahlien, Linda Ullmark, Thomas and Faasse.

Carolina is 2-0 on the season, having swept its way through two games in the state of Colorado after defeating Denver 2-1 in the season opener. Up next, the team returns to Dorrance Field for its official home opener against No. 14 Georgia on Thursday at 5 p.m.
