UNC baseball ended a five-game homestand with a win on Tuesday night, beating Campbell 7-4 and snapping the Camels’ 12-game win streak.
The Diamond Heels (23-14) relied on three scoreless innings from sophomore right-hander Davis Palermo to close out the game. The Chapel Hill native was the sixth pitcher in a platoon that took the mound on Tuesday, with sophomore Shawn Rapp opening for the Heels in his first start of the season.
On offense, outfielder Angel Zarate and first baseman Hunter Stokely each drove in two runs. Stokely was the one who got the Diamond Heels on the board in the first inning with his single plating two baserunners. Zarate’s two RBIs came in a big sixth inning for Carolina, as he pushed the lead to 5-2. Third baseman Mac Horvath then grounded into a fielder’s choice to extended Carolina’s advantage by another run.
Campbell scored three of its four runs in part because of throwing errors by the Heels — two of which came in the seventh inning. Lawson Harrill and Zach Neto scored on a throwing error from Carolina’s Kyle Mott. That brought the score to 6-4 with a Campbell runner on second. But then Palermo came in for Mott, struck out the next two batters and got out of the jam. The relief pitcher ultimately struck out five Camels over his three innings of relief, allowed just one hit and picked up his second save of the season.
While Campbell’s winning streak on the season was snapped, the Diamond Heels’ streak in the series against the Camels is extended to seven games. Carolina now leads the series 38-10 against the in-state foes.
The Diamond Heels are set to hit the road and return to ACC play this weekend. Up next is a three-game series in Charlottesville against Virginia, who are 19-2 at home this season. The first game of the series is scheduled for Friday with first pitch shortly after 6 p.m.
