Junior forward Alyssa Ustby of the UNC women’s basketball team will be taking her talents abroad later this month. Ustby was named to the 2022 U23 USA Basketball Women’s 3X3 team, UNC announced Tuesday morning. Team USA will compete in the FIBA U23 Nations League in the Dominican Republic later in August.

Ustby is one of just six players on the team, and earned her spot after taking part in an 11-woman tryout in Miami this past weekend. Team USA’s training camp will run through Thursday, and the games begin on Saturday.

“Alyssa earned the opportunity to try out for this team and played her way onto the roster with the relentlessness and versatility that we have come to trust in her game,” said UNC head coach Courtney Banghart. “We are so enormously proud that she’ll be representing the Carolina blue while wearing the red, white, and blue as she goes for gold.”

Ustby started all 32 games as a sophomore for UNC last season, averaging 12.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Her 13 double-doubles ranked second in the ACC, and she was named to the All-ACC second team and the All-ACC Academic Team.

The FIBA 3X3 Nations League is often used as preparation for bigger events such as the 3X3 World Cup and the Olympics. 3X3 basketball was first introduced as an Olympic sport in the 2021 Tokyo Summer Games.
