The wins just keep on coming for the UNC women’s lacrosse program.

Less than a week after helping the team win its third national championship, midfielder Ally Mastroianni and defender Emma Trenchard each won the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association’s awards for Player of the Year at their positions.

Boston College attacker Charlotte North was named the IWLCA’s overall Player of the Year.

Mastroianni and Trenchard were each essential to Carolina’s undefeated season. Mastroianni, playing in her fifth and final season as a Tar Heel, served as head coach Jenny Levy’s draw control ace all year, winning 136 draws (the next closest teammate had 58). Mastroianni also had by far her best offensive season at UNC in 2022, putting up career highs in both goals (48) and points (57). She scored hat tricks in three of Carolina’s final five games and scored twice in the championship win against Boston College.

Trenchard and the rest of the UNC defense were the best in the ACC all season long, ranking first in the conference in both goals allowed (187, with the next closest team allowing 220) and scoring margin (+8.3). In the team’s NCAA Tournament run, the Tar Heels allowed just 32 goals combined across the four games. Boston College’s final two losses to the Tar Heels, in the ACC Championship and the NCAA Championship, saw the Eagles score their fewest and second-fewest goals of the season. Though Trenchard missed four games, she still ranked third on the team in forced turnovers (12) and ground balls (23). Like Mastroianni, Trenchard just completed her final season as a Tar Heel.
