World Eating Disorders Action Day is June 2 and one eating disorders researcher was just recognized by an international group.

The Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) announced it would be giving UNC School of Medicine’s Cynthia Bulik a lifetime achievement award. The AED is an international organization focuses on eating disorders research, education, treatment and prevention.

Bulik is the founding director of the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders and leads the Karolinska Institute, Centre for Eating Disorders Innovation. These organizations are focused not only on treatment for eating disorders but also understanding the genetics that lead to these illnesses.

Through the National Institute of Mental Health, Bulik serves as principal investigator of the global Eating Disorders Genetics Initiative.

Bulik previously led a study focused on how people with eating disorders were being affected by the pandemic. That study showed increases in behaviors related to eating disorders.
