The ACC announced on Wednesday that it will delay the start of competition in fall sports until September 1.

“The decision allows each campus to further focus on ensuring return to competition protocols are in place to facilitate the resocialization process,” said a release from the conference.

The delay affects all exhibition and non-conference games in men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. Official schedules for fall Olympic sports have not been released yet. The decision was unanimously approved by the ACC Board of Directors.

UNC’s football schedule does not begin until September 4, when the Tar Heels travel to Orlando face off against UCF. On Wednesday, the university announced that voluntary football workouts have been paused after 37 members of the athletics program tested positive for coronavirus.

The first ACC football game is scheduled for September 2 when NC State travels to Louisville.

“The league continues to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on fall schedules and competitions with the understanding that there may be future changes, and that the priority remains the health and safety of our student-athletes,” said the release.
