The UNC men’s soccer team is postponing its scheduled Friday match with No. 17 Clemson until Monday, October 3 at 7 p.m., the program announced Wednesday evening. The move hopes to avoid heavy rainfall in the area due to Hurricane Ian.
“The head coaches agreed to move the game in anticipation of more favorable field and weather conditions,” the program said. “Inclement weather as a result of Hurricane Ian is expected in the area in the coming days.”
Due to the match moving to Monday, UNC has cancelled its upcoming match at Elon, originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 4.
The match is the first on-campus athletics event to be affected by the incoming weather. Friday night’s volleyball match vs. Miami in Carmichael Arena and Live Action with Carolina Basketball in the Dean Smith Center have not been postponed as of Wednesday night.
Saturday afternoon’s football game vs. Virginia Tech will also go on as scheduled, UNC head coach Mack Brown said Wednesday morning. According to Brown, “we have not had any conversations,” about potentially postponing or moving the game. Notably, the playing surface at Kenan Stadium is synthetic turf, while the playing surface at Dorrance Field is natural grass.
