Derek Dixon, who is rated as a four-star prospect in the recruiting class of 2025, announced his commitment to Hubert Davis and the UNC men’s basketball program on Friday.

“Coach Davis, spending time with him on the visit, talking with him over the phone, you can see how genuine of a person he is,” Dixon said. “He’s a great person to spend time with and learn from. And the rest of the staff, I felt the love. I felt I was a priority for them, which is something that was really big for me.”

Dixon, originally from Washington, D.C., chose Carolina over several other schools, including Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Virginia. The six-foot, three-inch combo guard is listed as the No. 51 overall player in the 2025 class by 247 Sports. Dixon averaged 15 points and three rebounds per game during the most recent Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) season, shooting 39 percent on three-pointers and 91 percent on free throws. His team finished with a 14-1 record.

“I felt like I fit what they were doing,” Dixon said of his impressions of UNC. “And there’s an opportunity for me there.”

Dixon will join a Carolina roster which will lose All-American R.J. Davis after the 2024-25 season. The Tar Heels could also potentially lose freshmen Ian Jackson and Drake Powell, who are projected as first-round picks in the 2025 NBA Draft. Dixon is the first player from the 2025 recruiting class to commit to UNC.
