A pair of Tar Heels will represent their country this August. Rising junior Talia Dellaperuta and redshirt freshman Ally Sentnor of the UNC women’s soccer team were named to Team USA’s final roster for the 2022 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. The tournament will be played from August 10 through August 28 in Costa Rica.
“It is an extraordinary honor to be selected to represent your country for any event, but it is even more significant if you are a part of a roster competing for a World Championship,” said head coach Anson Dorrance. “Talia and Ally have that World Championship opportunity before them and it is a tribute to their talent but also to their commitment to live on a never ending ascension.”
This will be the second World Cup appearance of Dellaperuta’s career. She suited up for Team USA at the 2018 U17 World Cup and has earned 19 caps, the most of any player on the team. Dellaperuta struggled with injuries last season for UNC, appearing in just seven games after starting 19 her freshman season.
Sentnor’s appearance with Team USA is just another milestone in a remarkable comeback. Sentnor suffered an ACL injury last fall which sidelined her for the entirety of what would have been her freshman season at Carolina. Sentnor redshirted in 2021 and still has four years of eligibility remaining with the Tar Heels.
Team USA will begin play in the tournament on Thursday, August 11 against Ghana at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on FS2.
