Thousands of residents are without power in Chapel Hill and Carrboro on Thursday as the remnants of Tropical Storm Zeta sweep through North Carolina.

As of 5:27 p.m., Duke Energy is reporting more than 4,000 customers in Orange County and Chatham County each are without power. Parts of Northern Hillsborough, including downtown, were reported as having more than 1,000 residents without power, while different neighborhoods around Eastgate Lake and along Fordham Bouelvard reported hundreds of outages in Chapel Hill.

Duke Energy says crews for the utility company are either traveling to the various regions to assess damage or are currently making repairs. As of early Thursday afternoon, no timetable has been shared on the Outage Map for the restoration of power.

Hurricane Zeta slammed into the Gulf Coast on Wednesday, killing at least one person. Zeta — now classified as a tropical storm — had sustained winds of 110 mph as a Category 2 hurricane at landfall and was the 27th named storm of the hurricane season. The Triangle region was given a wind advisory by the National Weather Service from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday as a result of Zeta traveling through North Carolina.

Orange County Schools made the decision to hold classes virtually on Thursday for the limited in-person classes that had resumed earlier this week.
