UNC announced its preliminary plans to administer refunds to students for campus housing and dining services Monday evening.

During a special meeting of the UNC Board of Governors on March 30, Interim President Bill Roper announced that the UNC System is committed to “prorated reimbursements of payments for unused housing and dining services as a result of the UNC System’s rapid response to COVID-19.”

After UNC reduced it operations earlier this month, campus residence halls were closed to all without a special waiver and dining hall use was limited to take-out only.

Chancellor Guskiewicz addressed the campus community with a formal notice acknowledging that students were concerned about receiving a refund.

“We understand the financial pressures that you and your families face, and we are pleased to share that the UNC System just confirmed today that we will be able to issue prorated refunds for these specific services,” Guskiewicz said.

While the school system has confirmed that refunds will be issued, it is still unclear exactly when and how the refund process will be carried out.

“This has been a very fluid process, and we are still working through the details of how these refunds will be calculated and when payments will be made to you,” Guskiewicz said.

Guskiewicz said refund amounts will vary from student to student depending on the cost of each person’s housing and meal plan. He said more details about the refunds will be shared by the university as soon as possible.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate through these challenging times,” Guskiewicz said.
