The deadline for UNC employees to report their vaccination status has been extended, with a new incentive program introduced to encourage more faculty and staff to get their COVID-19 vaccine.

UNC faculty and staff must report their vaccination status by October 1, an extension from the previous deadline of September 15.

In a statement to the campus community on Wednesday, the Carolina Together Testing team said the new deadline is “because we have seen an increase in the number of people getting vaccinated recently and would like to give the additional employees time to get their vaccines.”

The university said the number of employees vaccinated has increased by more than 800 employees in the past 10 days. As of Thursday, 84 percent of all university employees and 93 percent of students have attested to being vaccinated.

Unvaccinated faculty and staff, or those who have chosen not to report their vaccination status to the university, must test for COVID-19 once a week at the Carolina Together Testing Center. Unvaccinated students must test twice a week.

Employees who attest to vaccination between September 15 and October 1 will automatically be entered into a virtual Golden Ticket drawing. The Golden Ticket program is an incentive program set to offer prizes to those adhering to the university’s COVID-19 Community Standards. All students, faculty and staff can receive a Golden Ticket at any time as part of the Carolina Together Ambassadors program.

While the UNC System is not requiring students or staff to get the COVID-19 vaccine, it is requiring the campus community to self-report whether they got their shots.

Under set UNC System guidelines, individual campuses, like Carolina, do not have the authority to require poof of vaccination during the attestation process – i.e. submitting vaccination cards. Both faculty and students have called for a change in that procedure.

The Student Stores Pharmacy offers vaccinations for faculty, staff and students Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Appointments are requested, but not required.
