A series of electric scooter thefts around UNC campus is leading police to investigate whether the incidents are connected.

The UNC Public Safety department issued an Alert Carolina message on Thursday morning around 11:45 a.m., warning the campus community that three thefts of scooters have been reported in the last ten days. According to the department’s crime log, which tallies the incidents called in to campus police, the most recent thefts happened at the Graham Student Union, the Granville Towers student living community and an undergraduate student parking lot.

The Alert Carolina acknowledged that police are “not ruling out the possibility” that the thefts could be related. Since August, UNC Police has received six reports of stolen electric scooters from campus.

UNC requires electric scooter-users on campus to park their motor vehicles in designated areas and to register them through the campus Transportation & Parking Department. The university says doing so, as well as using a U-lock or other secure devices when storing a scooter, should help prevent thefts or aid recovery efforts in case they are lost.

Police said Thursday anyone with information potentially helpful to the ongoing investigation is encouraged to call the Criminal Investigations Division at 919-966-2120. If anyone notices “suspicious activity” around bike racks or the scooter parking areas, they are encouraged to call 911 immediately.
