This week, UNC Hospitals celebrated a major milestone in the construction of its new Surgical Tower by holding a traditional “topping out” ceremony. During construction, topping out is a builders’ tradition held when the last beam is placed atop a structure.

Scheduled to open in 2024, the new, seven-story Surgical Tower will be the largest single building on the UNC Hospitals campus in Chapel Hill. At more than 357,000 square feet, it will feature operating rooms that range from 650 to 1,000 square feet – almost double the size of UNC Hospitals’ older spaces.

The building will also include enhanced pre-op and post-op rooms for patients, and comfortable spaces for their loved ones to wait during their procedure. Additionally, a new 15-bed Observation Unit to support an efficient patient care plan, according to the healthcare system.

Janet Hadar, president of UNC Hospitals, said not only will the Surgical Tower provide more space for patients, families, visitors and providers, it will also help UNC Hospitals remain at the top of the field in surgical practice.

“This Surgical Tower will ensure that UNC Hospitals is able to provide excellent care and the latest technology for future generations of patients from our across the state,” said Hadar. “We are excited about the progress of this construction project, especially during a global pandemic. We look forward to the day we can open and begin caring for patients in this amazing new space.”

Construction on the building, located off Manning Drive and West Drive, began construction in 2019.
