With the retirement of a longtime president of its centerpiece hospital system, UNC Health has announced plans to rename one of its Chapel Hill towers in his honor.

The health system shared it is renaming the tower at the N.C. Neurosciences Hospital after Gary Park, who retired from UNC Health on Sunday. UNC Health cited Park’s leadership and advocation for the improved delivery and quality of care during his 20 years of work for the system, 15 of which he served as president of UNC Hospitals.

“The Gary L. Park Tower at N.C. Neurosciences Hospital will recognize Gary for his leadership of UNC Hospitals and service to the people of our organization and the entire state of North Carolina,” said Wesley Burks, CEO of UNC Health. “We appreciate and applaud Gary’s commitment to improving healthcare for all North Carolinians.”

During Park’s tenure as president from 2004 to 2019, UNC Hospitals opened the N.C. Cancer Hospital and the Hillsborough Campus, expanded mental health services in Raleigh with the Wakebrook campus, began construction of a new surgical tower in Chapel Hill and won a multitude of awards for excellence in clinical care and patient satisfaction.

Since 2019, Park helped oversee the expansion of UNC Health as the healthcare system’s Chief Operating Officer. He is also the recent recipient of The Order of the Long Leaf Pine award, the highest honor bestowed by North Carolina.
