The White House announced last week its intent to nominate Duke Buchan III as Ambassador to Spain. Buchan, a Henderson, North Carolina native, graduated from UNC with a B.A. in Economics and Spanish in 1985.

After graduating from Carolina, Buchan founded a highly successful private investment management firm called Hunter Global Investors and soent time at several large financial and Wall Street firms including Merrill Lynch.

Buchan serves on Carolina’s Arts and Sciences Foundation Board of Directors and on the Chancellor’s Philanthropic Council. His family also established the Buchan Excellence Fund, which the University called “the largest single endowment at Carolina dedicated to support faculty, graduate students and undergraduates working in Spanish languages, literature and culture”.

The family also provided funding to purchase the old Chapel Hill Public Library for use as the University’s Arts and Sciences Foundation, which is named the Buchan House.
