North Carolina is soliciting for a new license plate agency contractor in Orange County after an investigation closed the last operation.

The state Division of Motor Vehicles announced in a release Friday it was accepting applications for an Orange County location.

The release said that the division policy is “to open applications to operate a license plate agency whenever a contract expires or ends.” The last location closed in mid-July amidst an investigation for “possible violations of state laws.”

The previous location was closed after approximately four years worth of operation in the Gateway Commons shopping center on Franklin Street. The agency prior to that location was closed as the result of an embezzlement investigation.

The ongoing investigation into the latest closure began with an anonymous tip.

Applications are being accepted for a new contractor until Wednesday, September 6.
