The committee searching for the 12th UNC – Chapel Hill chancellor will hold two public forums to allow for input on what qualities the university should be looking for in a new leader.

The 20-member search committee was announced at the Board of Trustees meeting in August and began work on identifying candidates earlier this month, according to a message sent by the university on behalf of Richard Stevens – who is chairing the Board of Trustees and the search committee.

The first opportunity for public input is set for Tuesday, September 17, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Frank Porter Graham Student Union auditorium and the second will follow the next day from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Pleasants Room at Wilson Library.

Stevens, at that August meeting of the board, listed some of the qualities he feels would make a good selection for the next chancellor.

“We want someone who is innovative, who is a visionary, who will do a very good job for this university,” Stevens said.

Stevens also thanked interim chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz at that meeting.

Guskiewicz took over after a tumultuous conclusion to the tenure of former chancellor Carol Folt. Protesters pulled down the Confederate monument on the campus known as Silent Sam on the first day of classes in the fall of 2018. That set off months of tension on the campus and between the university administration and the UNC System Board of Governors. Folt ordered the removal of Silent Sam’s remaining base in mid-January of this year. At the same time, she offered her resignation effective at the end of the academic year. The system board accelerated that timeline to the end of January. System president Bill Roper, who himself is serving in an interim capacity, then appointed Guskiewicz the interim chancellor.

Guskiewicz has expressed a continued interest in serving as chancellor full time.

Stevens said the search committee was hoping to work expeditiously. That committee will ultimately recommend three finalists to the campus Board of Trustees, which can either accept or reject the nominations. If accepted, the nominations would be sent to Roper, who will make one recommendation to the system Board of Governors.

Public input can also be submitted on the website established for the search.
