This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Melissa Driver Beard, the executive director of the Chatham Outreach Alliance (or CORA).
“Cora is a nonprofit. It’s located in Pittsboro and our mission is really pretty simple,” she said. “It’s to create a community without hunger, basically to feed those who live in our community that may be facing food insecurity during a time of crisis or as an everyday situation.”
CORA has served about 11,000 people with close to a million and a half pounds of good, healthy food.
“I think CORA is special for a number of reasons. One of which is that we allow our clients who come to us to actually shop. So we are set up a little bit like a grocery store and folks who come through get to choose what they want.
“So that helps us provide them with a measure of dignity and control that they may not have in their lives at that time.”
